Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing:

Breckenridge cross-country skiing or snowshoeing is an amazing addition to any winter vacation. The trail system offers countless miles of groomed terrain, suitable for all levels. Breckenridge offers two Nordic centers: The Gold Run Nordic Center at the Breckenridge Golf Club has more than 12 groomed miles of skating and classic trails, as well as backcountry touring and snowshoe trails. Horse-drawn sleigh rides are also available. The Breckenridge Nordic Center near, Peak 8 boasts over 18 miles of groomed skating and classic skiing as well as more than 12 miles of snowshoe trails.  There is also the Frisco Nordic Center for another great option!

If exploring some historic mining ruins on your own is more your style, the Breckenridge trail system offers hundreds of miles of ungroomed trails to explore. Bring your own snowshoes or rent them and embark on a self-guided adventure or take a guided tour.

Find the Right Backcountry Trail with Top Resources:

Some of our Favorite Backcountry Trails:

McCullough Gulch: Xcountry Ski OR Snowshoe:  Take Highway 9 South through town into Blue River.  Turn right onto Blue Lakes Road (County Road 850).  You will see a big parking area to the right.  Park there and you will see a trail that will take you onto County Road 851.  This trail is also listed in the Summit County Hiker Book that we leave in the Airbnb for our guests.

Boreas Pass: Snowshoeing or cross country skiing Boreas Pass Road is one of the best ways to view the Ten-Mile Range and Breckenridge Ski Resort.

French Gulch OR Sallie Barber Mine Trail: Xcountry Ski OR Snowshoe: From Our road, turn left onto County Road 450 (Forest Hills Drive).  Make an immediate left onto Reiling Road. Take Reiling Road all the way until it comes to a T with Wellington Road.  Turn Left onto Wellington Road.  Wellington Road will turn into French Gulch Road.  Take French Gulch Road all the way until it ends at the French Gulch Trailhead.  Once parked, you can ski/snowshoe up Sallie Barber to the Sallie Barber Mine or you can go up French Gulch Road further.

South Illinois Creek Trail: Snowshoe Trail: This trail is one of the closest to town and offers beautiful views of Breckenridge along the way. Make sure to stop and say hi to the Troll before or after you park at Stephen C. West Ice Arena and start your hike. You’ll find him right off of the Trollstigen Trailhead. Just follow the Troll footprints from the parking lot!

B&B Trail: Not only is this trail close to our house, but the B&B Trail also quickly transports you back to the early mining days of Breckenridge with mound after mound of tailings piles and relics from the past. Saunter through the wintry woods for close to a mile before coming to a junction. Take a left to continue on the loop or hang a right to extend your day on Turk’s Trail before joining up with Sallie Barber Road. On your return trip, stop and check out the historic Reiling Dredge and enjoy the views of peaks 6 and 7 of Breckenridge Ski Resort in the distance.
